Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit have concluded their investigation into a fire that killed two children at a residence in the City of Markham. This fire has been deemed accidental and no charges have been laid.

On Sunday, May 17, 2020 shortly after 10 a.m., police, York Region Paramedic Services and Markham Fire and Emergency Services were called to a residence on Bur Oak Avenue for a report of a fire. When officers arrived, they found three people with serious injuries who were transported to hospital.

Officers determined that a family of five resided at the location. A six-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and their mother, a 41-year-old woman, were all taken hospital suffering from critical injuries. The father was away from the residence at the time of the incident.

A 12-year-old boy who was unaccounted for was located deceased inside the residence on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

On July 22, 2020, the six-year-old boy who was in hospital succumbed to his injuries.

Through a lengthy and thorough investigation, officers have determined that this incident was accidental and no one has been charged.
