Homicide unit investigating Markham fire that left 2 children dead

Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit have taken over the investigation following a fire at a residence in the City of Markham.

On Sunday, May 17, 2020 shortly after 10 a.m., police, York Region Paramedic Services and Markham Fire and Emergency Services were called to a residence on Bur Oak Avenue for a report of a fire. When officers arrived, they found three people with serious injuries who were transported to hospital.

Officers determined that a family of five resided at the location. A six-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and their mother, a 41-year-old woman, were all taken hospital suffering from critical injuries. The father was away from the residence at the time of the incident.

A 12-year-old boy who was unaccounted for, was located deceased inside the residence on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

On July 22, 2020, the six-year-old boy who was in hospital succumbed to his injuries.

Through investigation with the Office of the Fire Marshal, the fire has been deemed suspicious. As a result, the York Regional Police Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have any information on this house fire to please come forward.
