Body of 12-year-old boy found at scene of Markham house fire

Mother, two sons remain in critical condition

Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau, along with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal, continue to investigate following a fire at a residence in the City of Markham.

On Sunday, May 17, 2020 shortly after 10 a.m., police, York Region Paramedic Services and Markham Fire and Emergency Services were called to a residence on Bur Oak Avenue for a report of a fire. When officers arrived, they found three people with injuries who were transported to hospital.

Officers determined that a family of five resided at the location. A six-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and their mother, a 41-year-old woman, are all in hospital in critical condition. The father was away from the residence at the time of the incident.

Sadly, a body believed to be that of the fifth family member, a 12-year-old boy who was unaccounted for, was located inside the residence on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

The fire is not considered to be suspicious at this time.

The investigation is ongoing. Bur Oak Avenue, between Kennedy Road and William Berczy Boulevard, remains closed.
