17 flower planters on Main Street vandalized in recent weeks

The Town of Newmarket is calling on residents to help keep the town beautiful, and to report any vandalism to police

The Town of Newmarket is calling on residents to do their part in keeping Newmarket beautiful as planters on Main Street continue to be vandalized in recent weeks.

The town has reported to York Regional Police that a total of 17 planters have been vandalized, a spokesperson confirmed.

This is not the first time the downtown flower displays have been the victim of vandals. In summer 2021, 16 planters were pushed over and vandalized in an overnight incident. It sparked outrage from both the municipality and community.

Surveillance video from the time showed a suspect vandalizing planters on the street and York Regional Police charged a 34-year-old Newmarket man with mischief over $5,000 in relation to the vandalism.

If you see vandalism or graffiti after the fact, you are encouraged to report it to the town at [email protected].

If you see vandalism in progress, you can report it to York Regional Police online for non-emergency situations or call the non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5432.
