Newmarket man charged with mischief following vandalism of downtown planters

York Regional Police have charged a man with mischief in connection to the vandalism of planters in downtown Newmarket July 29.

Steve Dagenais, 34, of Newmarket faces a single charge of mischief over $5,000.

Police said Aug. 4 that thanks to community tips and investigation, the #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau identified and charged a suspect. The charges relate to 16 planters being tipped over on Main Street in the early morning hours, which police said amounted to approximately $8,000 in damages.

Police released an image of the suspect the previous day based on video footage.

"We want to thank our community for assisting us with this incident," York Regional Police said in a news release.

The incident sparked outrage from both the public and the municipality. The town asked for a thorough police investigation.

"We will not tolerate this type of behaviour," Newmarket Councillor Bob Kwapis said on Facebook.
