Video captures suspect in vandalism of planters on Newmarket's Main Street

York Regional Police has released images of a man wanted in connection with the July 29 incident

York Regional Police is seeking public assistance after receiving a video of a suspect who allegedly wrecked 16 planters in downtown Newmarket last week.

A lone male vandalized the Town of Newmarket planters on Main Street at around 3:45 a.m. July 29, according to police.

A video shows a suspect leaving the Grey Goat Pub on Main before the incident occurred, police say.

He is described as a white male with a medium build and brown hair. He was wearing dark jeans, a grey T-shirt and brown dress shoes.

“Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or anyone with video surveillance that may have captured the incident, to please come forward,” the police news release stated.

The incident sparked outrage from the municipality and the public on social media. The town sought a thorough investigation from the police.

“It makes me very angry,” Mayor John Taylor told NewmarketToday at the time. “There are so many people who put so much work into their business downtown, and our staff take great pride in those planters.”

Town staff restored the planters, which were upturned and strewn throughout the street, later the same day.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information who can assist in identifying the suspect is asked to contact York Regional Police #1 Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7142.
