Witness sought in SIU investigation of fatal officer-involved shooting in Markham (2 photos)

Special Investigations Unit believes the driver of a silver SUV in the parking lot on Jan. 21 might have information that could aid the investigation

Ontario's Special Investigation's Unit (SIU) is trying to track down a possible witness to a fatal police-involved shooting in Markham last month.

A York Regional Police officer had an interaction with a 35-year-old man in the parking lot of a plaza at Fairburn Drive and Highway 7 in Markham at about 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 21. The man was shot and later died in hospital.

The SIU is now seeking the driver of a silver SUV who was in the parking lot at the time of the incident.

Security footage shows the driver walking through the parking lot. The person appears to be wearing a dark hooded jacket with light-coloured pants and was carrying a number of grocery bags. The video shows the individual driving the silver SUV at 9:15 p.m.

The SIU believes this person may have information that could assist in their investigation. They are also appealing for anyone else who was in the plaza at the time and has information to come forward.

So far investigators have spoken with 12 witnesses in relation with this investigation.

Anyone with information, including photographs or video, is asked to contact the SIU 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
