SIU investigating police-involved fatal shooting of man in Markham

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man shot by a York Regional Police officer last night in Markham.

At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 21, an officer on patrol came upon a man outside a vehicle in a shopping plaza at Fairburn Drive and Highway 7 in Markham according to an SIU news release. During an interaction, the man was shot and died later in hospital.

A uninjured adult female occupant in the vehicle was arrested at the scene for firearms-related offences, according to York Regional Police.  

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the SIU stated. One subject official and 12 witness officials have been designated to date.

York Regional Police investigators are also appealing that witnesses who have not yet spoken with police to come forward.  Officers would also like to speak with anyone who may have video surveillance or dashcam footage of  the incident.
