York Regional Police officer charged with sexual assault

A York Regional Police officer has been charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement.

The Professional Standards Bureau began an investigation in March, after allegations were made against the officer.

Det. Andrew Burford is facing three counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. He was suspended with pay beginning March 4.

Burford has been with York Regional Police since 2004.

In a news release, police said no further information will be released “in the interest of victim protection.”
