A flat-bed tow truck was intentionally set on fire in Markham early today, on the heels of a similar suspicious vehicle fire earlier this week in Whitchurch-Stouffville.

At about 1:40 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, officers were called to a vehicle rental and auto shop on Markham Road north of 16th Avenue for a report of a fire, according to York Regional Police.

They found the flat-bed tow truck fully engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished and no injuries are reported.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11:45 p.m., a sports utility vehicle at a mechanic’s shop on Sandiford Drive Whitchurch-Stouffville was intentionally set on fire, and which firefighters were able to prevent spreading to three tow trucks and an Audi that had been doused with lighter fluid.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, or anyone with video surveillance that captured any suspicious activity, to come forward.
