A wooden bridge deemed unsafe to cross that was immediately closed this week on Kennedy Road, 1.3 kilometres north of Mount Albert Road, has been repaired and is now open, a Regional Municipality of York spokesperson said.

“The overall age of the structure, and deterioration of wooden planks that help to form the top deck of the bridge was the cause of the issue,” the region’s capital planning and delivery manager Paul Acquaah said.

It appears that during a routine patrol, York Region staff noticed a hole in the deck of the bridge that needed to be repaired immediately, Acquaah said, and the bridge was closed to all traffic, pedestrians and cyclists.

“To address the issue, the deck of the bridge was reinforced with steel plates and then an asphalt layer put on top,” he said. “The road and bridge are now open to traffic. Staff will continue to monitor the repairs and will take any actions, if required.”
