Residents flock to the Mercedes Benz Water Feature at Riverwalk Commons to cool down during the extreme heat advisory, which is expected to end tomorrow.

York Region is warning residents to take care against the heat as hot weather conditions persist today.

The region issued an extended heat warning as Environment Canada has warned of high temperatures, that will see maximums of 30C to 34C today.

The region said anyone can be at risk from extreme heat.

“Prolonged heat events can increase these health risks. Warning signs of heat-related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion,” the region said in a news release. “If you experience any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention. Check on friends, family and neighbours frequently during heat events.”

The region advised to stay indoors, drink extra fluids and reduce physical activity today as the heat stays high.

“Staying cool, hydrated and reducing outdoor physical activity are the best ways to beat the heat during hot and humid weather,” the region said.

Newmarket facilities, including the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. W., the Magna Centre at 800 Mulock Dr. and the Newmarket Public Library at 438 Park Ave. are available as cooling stations.

The region said to reduce sun exposure, particularly between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the UV index is at its highest.

“If you need to be outdoors in the heat, rest frequently to allow your body temperature to cool down,” the region said.

Environment Canada has forecasted a cold front that will reduce the heat Thursday
