Southlake Regional Health Centre's emergency department is in lockdown Monday afternoon.

York Regional Police are on the scene after the hospital declared a "code silver" hold and secure in the department, according to an email sent to staff at the Newmarket hospital at about 2:30 p.m. June 12.

Police have secured the perimeter of the emergency "out of an abundance of caution," the hospital stated.

Southlake spokesperson Derek Rowland said there is no immediate threat to public safety.

“This action is being taken out of an abundance of caution,” Rowland said. “More information will be provided following further direction from the York Regional Police.”

The message from the hospital to staff said they should refrain from using the department’s exits and entrances unless necessary for patient care.
