Newmarket restaurant closed; Markham and Newmarket eateries charged for food safety violations

A restaurant in Newmarket was temporarily closed, while three food establishments in Markham and a Newmarket restaurant were charged with food safety violations by York Region Public Health inspectors last week.

Sushi Garden at 17915, units 3 to 4, Leslie St. in Newmarket, was ordered to close on April 23 for operating in a manner permitting a health hazard and failing to maintain the food premise in a clean and sanitary condition, according to the public health inspection report.

The report notes a list of noncompliance items that include: fail to provide handwashing station with adequate supplies; fail to maintain handwashing station; fail to properly handle all food in a manner that prevents contamination or adulteration; fail to protect food from contamination or adulteration; fail to ensure equipment surface cleaned/sanitized as necessary; fail to sanitize utensils using a chemical solution at the minimum concentration; fail to provide equipment for cleaning and sanitizing utensils as required; fail to ensure equipment surface sanitized as necessary; fail to provide adequate protection against the entrance of pests; fail to keep washroom facility sanitary; fail to remove garbage/liquid waste when necessary to maintain sanitary condition; fail to ensure room is kept free from materials/equipment not regularly used; fail to ensure walls are kept clean/in good repair; fail to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair; fail to ensure premises is maintained with floor that is tight, smooth, and non-absorbent where food is handled; fail to maintain the premises in a clean and sanitary condition; and operate food premises maintained in manner adversely affecting sanitary condition.

Following a re-inspection on April 26, health inspectors found satisfactory compliance. A proof of public health sign was posted and the restaurant was reopened. 

La Mexicanada at 17600 Yonge St., FM21, in Newmarket charged with fail to maintain handwashing stations and sanitize utensils in a chlorine solution of less than 100 p.p.m. of available chlorine on April 23 after public health inspectors investigated a complaint.

The report notes non-compliance on issues including fail to maintain a handwashing station, fail to provide the dishwasher with a wash/rinse water temperature thermometer/thermometer that is easily readable, and failing to sanitize utensils in a chlorine solution of 100 ppm of available chlorine or more. Food handler education was conducted on-site and a ticket was served.

A1 Bakery at 7393 Markham Rd., units 80 to 81, in Markham was charged on April 24 for fail to protect food from contamination or adulteration.

The report notes non-compliance with fail to use a handwashing station for reasons other than its intended use, failing to properly store all food in a manner that prevents contamination or adulteration, including separating raw from ready-to-eat foods, and failing to cover food to prevent contamination.

Food handler education was carried out on-site, a proof of public health sign was posted and a ticket was served.

Agogo KTV at 7634 Woodbine Ave., unit 1, in Markham was charged on April 24 for handwashing stations not conveniently accessible by food handlers and fail to ensure the presence of food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

The report notes non-compliance with failing to sanitize utensils using a chemical solution at the minimum concentration, fail to provide clean wash water, fail to ensure equipment surface cleaned as necessary, fail to maintain records of pest control measures taken, fail to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair and fail to ensure the presence of certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation.

Food handler education was conducted on-site, an acceptable temporary measure was put in place, and a proof of public health sign was posted. A re-inspection will be conducted at a later date.

H2 KTV at 8601 Warden Ave., unit 30 , in Markham was charged April 25 with food premise not maintained with clean floors in the food-handling room, fail to provide handwashing stations with adequate supplies, fail to maintain records of pest control measures taken, and fail to clean utensils as often as necessary.

The report notes non-compliance with failing to provide a thermometer in refrigeration equipment, failing to maintain equipment in good repair, fail to maintain records of pest control measures taken, fail to ensure walls are kept clean/in good repair, fail to ensure floors are kept clean/in good repair and fail to maintain records of food purchased for one year. Food handler education was conducted on-site, an acceptable temporary measure was in place, proof of a public health sign was posted and a ticket was served.
