Province reports 597 people in ICU with COVID-19 and 58 deaths

Ontario Health has reported 4,855 new COVID-19 cases, although new cases counts may be underestimated due to limits on who can be tested

On Jan. 29, Public Health Ontario is reporting 3,439 COVID-positive patients in hospital and 597 people in intensive care units with COVID-19.

There are also 4,855 new COVID cases, although new case counts may be underestimated as testing is limited. 

The Jan. 29 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 6,685 recoveries and 58 deaths since yesterday's report. 
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 765 unvaccinated people, 207 partially vaccinated people, 3,480 fully vaccinated people, and 403 have unknown vaccination status. 
  • Lab-confirmed testing is mostly limited to Indigenous people, hospitalized people, and those who live or work in high-risk congregate care settings. As such a majority of the people being tested are fully vaccinated as per provincial or workplace mandatory vaccine policies.

Hospitalizations

  • 3,439 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 55 per cent were hospitalized because of COVID-19 and the other 45 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19. 
  • There are 597 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID-19. Of those, 82 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19 and the other 18 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID-19.
  • There are 373 COVID-19 patients on ventilators.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,026,291 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and reported 965,386 recoveries and 11,354 deaths.
