Cyclists in NewRoads sixth annual LakeRide raised more than $106,000 in September to support Southlake Regional Health Centre.

After COVID-19 restrictions delayed the official cheque presentation, members from Southlake Foundation visited the NewRoads GM dealership today to receive a cheque for $106,139.

NewRoads said this is nearly quadruple the amount normally raised with the bike event, which was held on Sept. 19, 2021.

Riders set off from the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre in Newmarket on 20, 40, 80, 120-kilometre trips. Participants collected donations ahead of ride day.

Fundraising and supporting the community is one of the pillars at NewRoads.

“We fundamentally think that giving back to the community is an important part of our organization,” said Michael Croxon, president and CEO at NewRoads.

He said they also encourage their associates to participate and donate their time to the community. Some of the team members are already preparing for the next Lakeride.

As for why they chose to support Southlake, Croxon said that as the local regional health centre, they do a lot of good work for the community but also have a large need.

“Southlake is an amazing institution,” he said. “Choosing to support Southlake is a bit of a natural for us.”

Planning is underway for the next NewRoads Lakeride, which is expected to take place later this fall.
