A 72-year-old Bradford woman has died following a fire at a Centre Street apartment building.

Bradford West Gwillimbury Deputy Fire Chief Olaf Lamerz confirmed the woman’s death.

At around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday night, Simcoe County paramedics, firefighters and police converged on the apartment building at 33 Centre St.

When they arrived on scene, smoke and flames were visible from a ground-floor unit.

The woman was rescued and transported by paramedics to a local hospital. She was subsequently taken to a Toronto trauma centre where she succumbed to her injuries.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the blaze. The investigation is continuing but the fire does not appear to be suspicious, says a news release from the South Simcoe Police.

The name of the victim is not being released.

At this time, there is no word on the amount of damage, or the cause of the blaze.
