Arson is suspected as the cause of a shed fire on a Main Street North property in Newmarket late last night.

Central York Fire Services arrived at residential property on Old Main Street at 11:30 p.m. to find a large shed fully engulfed in flames, according to an incident report.

Crews attacked the blaze defensively to prevent spread to the house or neighbouring properties. Less than an hour after arriving on the scene, the fire was fully extinguished, the report said.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been notified and the investigation has been turned over to York Regional Police.

No arrests have been made but the fire was deemed suspicious because there was no natural cause determined, Const. Maniva Armstrong with YRP said.

"There is no information or evidence to suggest the fire started on its own or by any other means, i.e. electrical, propane, therefore it’s considered suspicions in nature and suspected arson," she said.

No injuries were reported.

Four trucks were deployed to the scene with 16 firefighters and two chief officers. York Paramedic Services, York Regional Police and utility companies also worked in collaboration with CYFS.

This was the second fire CYFS crews responded to Sunday night, following a house fire cause by an overheated sump pump motor in the London Road area.
