Central York Fire Services rescued two dogs and reunited them with their family following a house fire last night on Harrison Drive in Newmarket.

When crews were called at 10:18 p.m. May 8, they were met with thick, black smoke coming from the front of the house in the London Road area.

The family of three who lived there had already evacuated to the front lawn, where they called 911, however, fire crews performed search and rescue at the home and saved two dogs.

The fire started in the basement, according to an incident report. A sump pump motor has overheated, caught on fire and spread to one section of the basement. It was extinguished less than hour after crews arrived on scene.

No injuries or casualties were reported, however, heavy smoke damage has rendered the house unlivable until repairs occur, the report stated.

Firefighter escorted the residents inside to collect some personal belongings.

Six fire trucks, 24 firefighters, and two chief officers were deployed to the scene, which was most of CYFS on duty resources.

Richmond Hill and East Gwillimbury fire crews were sent to the CYFS stations in case further resources were needed.

The top priority in residential fires is to get outside, CYFS said. Working smoke alarms and a home escape plan can help save lives. If possible, residents are told to close the door while escaping to contain the fire and then call 911 once safely outside.
