Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Ontario including our region. Storms are expected to develop this afternoon and could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy downpours.

Full text of the weather alert follows:

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for:
    •    Newmarket - Georgina - Northern York Region
    •    Barrie - Orillia - Midland
    •    Bracebridge - Gravenhurst
    •    Innisfil - New Tecumseth - Angus

Current details:
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop early this afternoon as a slow moving cold front moves through southern Ontario. The severe thunderstorm threat will diminish this evening.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
