Central York Fire Services rescued an occupant from a home on Wildwood Drive in Newmarket during a house fire on Sunday morning.

The cause has yet to be been determined for the fire at the home that appeared to have begun in the garage, with firefighters searching the house for a reported occupant in the basement who was brought to safety without injury.

Central York Fire Services responded to a report of a fire at the home on Wildwood at about 9:50 a.m. Nov. 12 and on arrival the crew encountered heavy smoke coming from the garage and rapidly extinguished the fire there, according to a CYFS incident report.

The fire moved through the wall to the attic, requiring an opening on the roof and extensive removal of insulation material, the report stated.

All other occupants of the home had evacuated prior to Central York Fire Services arrival, but the five residents have been displaced.

The investigation is ongoing into what caused the fire and Wildwood was closed between Carlson Drive and Hazelwood Drive for a few hours during the incident.

To extinguish the fire, five trucks, 22 firefighters, and two chief officers were deployed to the scene.

Since most of Central York Fire Services on duty resources were required, mutual aid from neighbouring fire services in Richmond Hill provided coverage in Aurora while CYFS crews were committed to the scene and East Gwillimbury fire services supported on scene.

Central York Fire Services is encouraging everyone in the community to make and practice a home escape plan in the event of a fire.

“Draw a floor plan of your home and find two ways out of each room,” Central York Fire Services said in a news release. “Make sure to get everyone in the home involved and practice the plan. When a fire occurs, the top priority is to get outside.”
