LETTER: World Water Day time to reflect on vital Lake Simcoe

'The water at the centre of our region keeps us centred and joyful,' says Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition

NewmarketToday welcomes your letters to the editor at [email protected]. Please include your daytime phone number and address (for verification of authorship, not publication).

This year, I had the privilege and pleasure of watching the fascinating stages of the ice breaking up, tinkling, sliding, snapping, splashing, clunking and crashing. It reminded me that despite the environmental challenges we face in southern Ontario, the water at the centre of our region keeps us centred and joyful.

People love Lake Simcoe in many ways, as reflected in our $420-million-a-year sustainable recreational tourism industry. It does rely on clean water and solid ice, though.

Just one week after the traditional day that ice huts must be off the lake, there is nary a scrap of ice to be seen in the lake. If you take notice, there are lots of signs of a changing and stressed lake. I encourage people to find out what is happening, do your part to reduce pollution, and support government action.

For World Water Day on March 22, the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition prepared blog and social media posts to update you on current issues facing Lake Simcoe:

To honour World Water Day, we welcome people to get their feet wet by learning how our waters are faring, reflecting, and helping however you can.
