Fitness centres join wave of COVID-19 closures

Some personal trainers are taking their workouts online to help keep people moving throughout the COVID-19 pandemic

Whatever your reason for working out, some habits will need to be adjusted over the next few weeks as we deal with the outcome of the COVID-19.

Joining our community centres in closing their doors to promote the social distancing need to reduce the viral spread, GoodLife Fitness, along with their discount chain, Fit4Less, were among the first to cease operation for the foreseeable future.

All memberships have been put on hold and both companies have made announcements that their staff will continue to be paid for at least the next two weeks.

CrossFit Newmarket Central is following with its announcement yesterdat morning.

“It is with great sadness that we have made the decision to temporarily close CFNAC for a minimum of 2 weeks effective Tuesday, March 17”, said posts on its website and social media channels.

By today, along with the province’s declaration of a state of emergency, LA Fitness, Orange Theory Fitness, 9Round Fitness, and Function Studio informed members of closures after  initially trying to stay open with improved hygiene and sanitation practices, as well as smaller group fitness classes to promote social distancing.

“Effective immediately, Function will be closing its doors until April 1, we hope you all stay healthy. Sadly, most small businesses won't survive this pandemic. I have spent the last 11 years trying to over deliver service and quality, variety of classes for the lowest membership rates anywhere...I am asking you all to really come together as the strong Function community we are and not put your memberships on hold so we can all sweat together again,” wrote owner Kelly Punzo in an email. “No matter what, I wouldn't change a thing, I love my life and sweating with you every day. Thank you.”

Some in-home personal trainers, as well as small fitness studios like Kangoo Club Kicks, are taking things virtual to get through this pandemic.

“After tonight’s class, all classes will be online through Zoom,” said Tracy Frankland, owner of Kangoo Club Kicks in Newmarket.

“There have been a lot of developments and changes in the last 24 hours and I want to keep everyone safe. Every day, I will post a new link for you to join the class, and that way we can keep bouncing together,” said Frankland.

Other options to maintain your workout schedule if your gym is unavailable, are to check the gym’s website or Youtube channel, as many are posting workouts that you can do from home.

Regardless of how you manage your fitness as we face off against the coronavirus, just keep moving, and remember, “This too shall pass.”
