The Town of Aurora is taking a significant step towards inclusivity by hosting an enlightening workshop for the community on LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion in Sport & Recreation. This initiative supports the Town’s dedication to diversity and inclusion.

Brock McGillis, a trailblazer in the fight for LGBTQ2S+ rights and the first openly gay professional hockey player in Canada, will lead the workshop. Scheduled for May 22, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Aurora Public Library, Program Room 2, this event is a step towards progress in the field of sports and recreation.

McGillis’ advocacy has not gone unnoticed. His relentless pursuit of equality and inclusion earned him the inaugural Herb Carnegie Trailblazer Award in 2023. His influence has been recognized by The Hockey News, naming him among the 100 most influential figures in hockey for three consecutive years: 2022, 2023, and 2024.

The focus on this workshop will be on implementing best practices to ensure that LGBTQ2S+ youth feel secure within sports organizations. It will cover the creation and maintenance of safe spaces, the adoption of inclusive language and behaviours, and the provision of support for the mental well-being of coaches and athletes. McGillis will also be leading a session with Town staff on the same day to reinforce the same topics.
