York officers rescue residents from smoke-filled home in Vaughan

Constables Nicola Foster, Justin Carosi and Joshua Hamilton helped safely evacuate several residents during a fire that started in the garage

Three York Regional Police officers are recovering from minor injuries after entering a smoke-filled home in search of residents in Vaughan on Thursday night.

When police responded to a report of a garage fire at a home in the Langstaff Road and Ansley Grove area Dec. 14 at about 10 p.m., they learned a resident had awoken to the smell of smoke and had been unable to get her husband out due to his illness.

When officers arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames. Const. Nicola Foster located two elderly residents near the front door and escorted them outside, while Const. Justin Carosi and Const. Joshua Hamilton entered the house to locate the remaining resident.

She was quickly located and Carosi was able to exit through the front door before smoke engulfed the hallway. Meanwhile, Hamilton safely evacuated the female resident to the backyard.

The residents did not suffer any serious injuries.

All three officers were treated for smoke inhalation and are recovering.

The cause of the fire was not deemed suspicious.
