Woman stabbed multiple times; Markham man charged with attempted murder

York Regional Police have taken a suspect into custody following a stabbing in the City of Markham.

On Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019 at 9:23 p.m., York Regional Police received a call to 9-1-1 for an injured female at a residence on Briarwood Road, which is in the area of 16th Avenue and Warden Avenue. When officers arrived they located the injured female, a 59-year-old from the City of Toronto, who was suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains.

The suspect, a 23-year-old man who resided in a room at the residence, locked himself inside of his room. Additional resources were called to the scene including officers with the Emergency Response Unit, Canine Unit and specially-trained crisis negotiators.

Shortly after midnight, officers with the Emergency Response Unit took the suspect into custody in his room without further incident. The suspect was not injured.

The name of the accused will not be released to prevent the identification of the victim.

    •    Attempted murder

The accused will be appearing in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 for a bail hearing.
