York Regional Police have arrested a male after a domestic incident in Newmarket that left a woman with serious injuries tonight.

Staff Sgt. Doug James said police are investigating the incident at Geer Terrace near Gorham and Leslie streets that began at about 6 p.m. on Jan. 5. He said York Region Paramedic Services transported one woman to an area hospital while police arrested one man.

Video from the scene shows a heavy presence of more than a dozen emergency vehicles.

“The investigation is ongoing. There is no risk to public safety at all,” James said.

Police have taped off a home on Geer Terrace, and James said further details would be provided Jan. 6.

Tristan Wannan, who lives on Crowder Boulevard,  said he saw the large number of emergency vehicles and a person leaving on a stretcher.

“I just thought it was crazy,” Wannan said. “With the heavy police presence, it was very alarming.”

Residents reacted with concern to the situation on social media, urging others to avoid the area.

“I just drove through there, and I have never seen so many police and ambulances,” one person wrote. “Something very serious is going on. I hope everyone involved is okay.”

“Definitely not something I’ve ever seen before,” Wannan said. “I just didn’t know what was going on and didn’t want to be in the middle.”
