York Regional Police have charged a 16-year-old teen from the Town of Newmarket with driving impaired by cannabis after he nearly collided with a cruiser.
On Tuesday, May 27, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., an officer was responding to another call when he observed a vehicle going through a red light, nearly colliding with his cruiser, in the intersection of Woodbine Avenue and Pollock Road in the Town of Georgina. The officer was able to quickly manoeuver to prevent the collision, but the other vehicle went off the road and struck a light pole.
The officer checked on the occupants of the vehicle, three teenage boys, and confirmed no one was injured. The officer continued to investigate and determined the driver was showing signs of impairment and suspected he had been smoking cannabis. He was arrested for being impaired by drugs. The vehicle was searched and cannabis and residue was located.
The driver was taken to #3 District for a test by a Drug Recognition Expert, which he failed.

Despite the legalization of cannabis, using any amount before driving can result in serious consequences. The penalties for driving impaired by drugs are the same as for those driving while impaired by alcohol. You can expect to be arrested, taken to the station as well as having your vehicle towed and your licence immediately suspended.
