A profanity was scratched into the side of a car with a Ukrainian flag on it in what police suspect could be a hate-motivated crime

The incident occurred on April 29 at about 3:20 p.m. in the parking lot of Walmart at 500 Copper Creek Dr. in Markham. The suspect parked his vehicle beside the victim's vehicle, got out and scratched "hateful profanity" into both the driver and passenger side doors, according to Crime Stoppers of York Region's crime of the week.

The suspect then fled the parking lot.

Police said the victim didn't have any negative interactions prior to the incident. Because the victim had a Ukrainian flag on the dashboard, police believe this this could be a hate-motivated incident.

The suspect is described as a bald male, aged 70 to 75, with a heavy build. He was wearing a brown coat, dark pants, dark running shoes and reading glasses.
