Vaughan teen faces attempt murder, arson charges following Richmond Hill fire

Investigators with the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a 17- year-old male with attempted murder and several other offences following an arson in the City of Richmond Hill.

On Feb. 26, 2022, at approximately 2:42 a.m., York Regional Police were called to an apartment building on Weldrick Road West for a report of a fire on the third floor.

Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services attended and were able to rescue several people who were trapped in their units by having them exit through the windows. The building was evacuated and the fire was extinguished.

One person was transported to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal was contacted and determined that the fire was intentionally set.

The suspect was identified and was arrested at a residence in the City of Vaughan.

  • A 17-year-old male from Vaughan

CHARGES: 

  • Attempt Murder 
  • Arson Disregard for Human Life 
  • Arson Cause Bodily Harm 
  • Arson Cause Property Damage 
  • Possess Incendiary Material for Arson 
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose 
  • Aggravated Assault.

This investigation is ongoing.
