Two teens arrested in fake cell phone fraud investigation

Investigating officers also seized a loaded handgun, cannabis, and Oxycodone, in addition to a quantity of fake cell phones

York Regional Police have charged two men, executed search warrants and seized a number of fake cell phones following a fraud investigation.

The investigation began on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020 when a victim reported a fraud. The victim had arranged to purchase a high-end cell phone from an ad posted on a social media platform. The victim met with the suspects and purchased the phone for $1,400 dollars. The phone was in a sealed package but when the victim got home and opened it, she realized the phone was fraudulent.

Through the investigation, officers determined the identities of the suspects and identified vehicles the suspects were operating. Warrants were executed on several vehicles and a residence in the Town of Innisfil. Officers seized a quantity of fake cell phones, many in sealed packages with fake receipts, approximately $3,000 dollars in cash, a loaded handgun and ammunition, approximately 2 lbs of cannabis individually packaged, two smart watches, Oxycodone pills and stolen licence plates.

Investigators believe that there may be additional victims who have purchased fake phones from social media buy/sell posts, and may be unaware if it has not been opened yet.

    •    Fraud under $5,000
    •    Possession proceeds of crime
    •    Distribution of cannabis - Cannabis Act

    •    Anthony Coorera, 18, of Innisfil

Charges:
    •    Possession of a Restricted Firearm
    •    Possession of a restricted firearm
    •    Careless use of a firearm
    •    Unauthorized possession of a firearm with ammunition
    •    Possession of Oxycodone
    •    Fraud under $5,000
    •    Possession proceeds of crime
    •    Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
    •    Distribution of cannabis - Cannabis Act
