Traffic stop in Richmond Hill leads to arrest of parolee, drugs seized

34-year-old Caledon man facing trafficking charges, statutory release has been revoked, police say

A Caledon man on federal parole for drug trafficking offences was arrested following a traffic stop Richmond Hill last Friday. 

On Friday, conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle. During the traffic stop on Dec. 1 at about 4:30 p.m. near Leslie Street and Minthorn Avenue, officers determined a driver had provided a fake name, was failing to comply with federal parole and had cannabis readily available, according to a York Regional Police news release.

During a vehicle search, more than 200 grams of suspected cocaine packaged for sale, a quantity of pills suspected to be fentanyl, more than 800 grams of illicit cannabis, approximately $5,000 cash, three cellphones and several bottles of alcohol, police said.

The street value of the suspected drugs is estimated to be more than $30,000, police added.

Tharshun Sivasubramaniam, 34, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine), possession of a controlled substance, obstruct peace officer and possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution. Sivasubramaniam is currently in custody as he was held for a bail hearing and his statutory release was revoked, police added.
