Toronto man arrested in Vaughan sexual assault

16-year-old victim was followed after exiting public transit and touched inappropriately in the Oct. 19 incident

Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section have charged a man in connection with a sexual assault that occurred in the City of Vaughan.

On Monday, Oct. 19, 2020, York Regional Police received a report of a sexual assault that had occurred on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020, in the area of Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive. Investigators learned that a 16-year-old victim had exited a transit bus around 6 p.m. An unknown man followed the victim and sexually assaulted her by touching her inappropriately.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2020, investigators arrested Jose Miguel Moreno Porras and have laid charges. Investigators are releasing an image of the accused to ensure there are no additional victims or witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

Charged:
    •    Jose Miguel Moreno Porras, 56, City of Toronto

Charges:
    •    Sexual assault
    •    Criminal harassment

Mr. Moreno Porras is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Dec. 3, 2020.

A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.

If you are the survivor of sexual assault, you can report the incident online if:
    •    You are not in danger
    •    The person who assaulted you is not present
    •    There is no evidence present that may be collected by police (blood, semen, saliva, etc.). Evidence can be collected for up to 12 days after the sexual assault has occurred
    •    You have access to a private email address, to which the suspect does not have access
