York Regional Police has arrested and charged a driver who chose to drive impaired while a child was in the vehicle.

On June 24, 2021, at approximately 6:45 p.m., an officer conducting patrol in Vaughan observed a vehicle driving erratically and failing to stop at a stop sign, leading him to believe the driver may be impaired.

The vehicle was stopped in the area of Clarence Street and Wycliffe Avenue and the officer quickly formed grounds to arrest the driver. Fortunately, the officer stopped the vehicle before anyone was hurt, including the two passengers in the vehicle, one of whom was a five-year-old girl.

The driver, a 33-year-old woman from Toronto, was charged with several offences including impaired operation, 80 plus and driving while under suspension.

We are not giving up in our fight against impaired driving. We are urging our citizens to partner with us in the Safe Roads: Your Call campaign by calling 911 if they suspect a driver is impaired, this weekend and all summer long. We consider these incidents life-threatening crimes in progress and will continue to respond to these calls.

More than 3,500 people call 911 to report impaired driving each year. These calls prevent serious or fatal collisions and have also led to thousands of impaired-related criminal charges being laid over the years.

The 911 calls have come in to us from many different sources, including from others motorists, pedestrians, drive-thru employees, gas station attendants, liquor store employees, neighbours, family and friends calling in to prevent potentially devastating situations. These calls save lives.

Our officers will be out all summer conducting RIDE spot checks and watching for impaired drivers. We remind those who choose to drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol that not only are police officers watching for them; our citizens also refuse to tolerate this behavior. Anyone choosing to put others at risk by driving while impaired should expect to be caught and charged.
