Update: Standoff ends, suspect in custody following Richmond Hill shooting

Large police presence in the area of Bayview and Major Mackenzie remains as investigation continues

10:27 p.m. update:

The suspect who has been in an armed standoff with York Regional Police since about 10:30 this morning is now in custody, according to police.

Residents of Maple and Elmwood Avenues who had been advised to remain in their basements and other safe locations in their homes are being informed the situation has been resolved.

However, a heavy police presence in the area will continue until the investigation is complete.

The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the incident.

10:15 p.m. update:

A suspect remains barricaded in a residence following a shooting this morning at the Petro-Canada station at Major Mackenzie Drive and Bayview Avenue in Richmond Hill.

York Regional Police continue to advise residents in the area of Elmwood and Maple avenues to remain in their homes and to shelter in the basement or another safe location in the house.

"We will advise when the situation has been concluded and (the) area is safe again," police said on social media. "Our call takers are calling residents now."

The standoff began shortly after a suspect fired shots at a police officer during a routine traffic stop at about 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27.

5:45 p.m. update:
York Regional Police remain on scene with a large presence after a shooting in the City of Richmond Hill.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. today, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Bayview Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive. During the interaction, shots were fired and the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

The suspect went inside a residence nearby and remains inside. There is a significant police presence in the initial location of the traffic stop, as well as in the area surrounding the residence the suspect is in.

The Special Investigations Unit has been contacted and has invoked their mandate. There were no injuries to the officer involved or any members of the public.

We want to thank our community for their patience and understanding while this incident is ongoing. We ask that drivers avoid the area of Major Mackenzie Drive and Bayview Avenue and the nearby side streets while the road closures are in effect. We also ask that residents in the area that have not been evacuated, please remain inside your homes away from the doors and windows.

The safety of our community is our primary concern and we will provide updates as the situation develops.

Original 1:30 p.m. information:
An "armed and dangerous" suspect is barricaded in a residence near Bayview Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill following a shooting incident earlier today.

A heavy police presence is visible in the area, according to York Regional Police on Twitter, nearby homes have been evacuated and Bayview is closed in the surrounding area.

The incident took place at the Petro-Canada gas station at the southwest corner of the intersection at about 10:30 a.m., when a York Regional Police officer stopped a vehicle. The suspect fired shots at a police officer, who fired back.

The suspect fled to a house in the nearby residential area, where he has been contained by the emergency response unit officers.

"We have Emergency Response Unit officers containing the scene and negotiators attempting to get the suspect safely into custody," police said.

No one has been injured, police report, however the condition of the suspect is unknown.
