A cyclist is dead after being hit by a vehicle that had rolled over while being followed by a York Regional Police cruiser early today in King City.

The province’s Special Investigation’s Unit (SIU), as well as the York Regional Police major collision unit, is investigating the collision that occurred on Keele Street, just south of Cavell Avenue near 16th Sideroad, at about 7 a.m. Friday, July 24 in King, according to York Regional Police.

Keele will remain closed for several hours, police said.

An officer conducting speed enforcement had been attempting to pull over a vehicle prior to the collision. At some point, the vehicle struck the male cyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver is in custody.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
