The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man fell to his death in Newmarket tonight.

The man fell onto the parking lot from a ledge about nine metres high at the John's No Frills on Davis Drive at Yonge Street, according to an SIU news release.

The man has not yet been identified, the SIU said.

York Regional Police received a 911 call at about 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug.30 that a man was causing a disturbance at the grocery store.

When officers arrived, a perimeter was contained.

A short time later, the man fell to the ground and was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased, the SIU said.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The unit is also urging anyone who may have video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
