An investigation by the Special Investigations Unit into a police interaction in Aurora has been terminated after it was determined the man was injured climbing fences.
The family of a 22-year-old Aurora man called York Regional Police July 17 concerned about his well-being after he left the house feeling anxious. Police officers and personnel were deployed to search for the man.
When he became aware of the police search, he began running through backyards and climbing on fences to evade them. As he was coming off of one chain link fence, his foot got caught and he fell to the ground, a report from the SIU said.
He eventually turned himself over to police and was taken to the hospital were he was diagnosed with fractures in his left arm and wrist.
An SIU investigation was launched, however after early inquiries, SIU director Joseph Martino determined it should be discontinued.
"It was plain and obvious that the man’s injury was in no way the result of any criminal conduct on the part of the police. Accordingly, there being nothing to investigate as far as the potential criminal liability of any police officer was concerned, the file has been closed," the SIU said.
The SIU investigates police conduct in Ontario which may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
