Richmond Hill man charged with impaired in Festive RIDE stop

The South Simcoe Police Service laid the following impaired driving charges, including two as a result of a Festive RIDE program.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022, at approximately 11:54 p.m., the South Simcoe Police Service was called to a report of a vehicle that struck a hydro pole on Canal Road in Bradford West Gwillimbury. There were no injuries. 

As a result of an investigation, 40-year-old Amir Tavakoli of North York was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired 
  • Operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol and 
  • Having care or control of motor vehicle with open container of liquor

On Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at approximately 10:24 p.m., South Simcoe Police Service officers were conducting a festive RIDE program at the intersection of Mapleview Drive and Sideroad 20 in Innisfil. As a result of the RIDE spot checks, the following charges were laid:

  • 52-year-old Maxim Baginskiy of Richmond Hill was charged with operation while impaired and operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol.
  • 27-year-old Andrew Low of Innisfil was charged with operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, at approximately 8:15 p.m., police were called regarding a car in the ditch on Line 8 near Professor Day Drive in Bradford West Gwillimbury. As a result of an investigation, 42-year-old Timothy Wetmore of Bradford was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired
  • Operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol

On Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022 at 7:52 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle collision in the area of 25th Sideroad and Big Bay Point Road in Innisfil.

There were no injuries. 

As a result of an investigation, 88-year-old Gerald Birt of Barrie was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired 
  • Operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol

On Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, at approximately 9:40 p.m., police were called to an ATV rollover in the area of Jans Boulevard and Andrade Lane in Innisfil.

The driver was treated in a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. As a result of an investigation, 39-year-old Alexander Jelly of Innisfil was charged with: 

  • Operation while impaired 
  • Operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol

Three-day licence suspension

On Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, at approximately 9:43 p.m., a South Simcoe Police Service officer observed a vehicle driving erratically on Innisfil Beach Road near the 10th Sideroad in Innisfil. As a result of an investigation, a 58-year-old Oro-Medonte man was issued a three-day licence suspension.

If you know or suspect that a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs, call 911. In doing so, you may save a life. The South Simcoe Police Service wants to thank the citizens who call us to report suspected impaired drivers. Charges of impaired driving result in an automatic driver's licence suspension for 90 days and vehicles impounded for seven days. Plan ahead if you plan on consuming drugs or alcohol. Make arrangements to have a designated driver, call a friend, take a taxi or use another form of transportation to get you home safely.

From Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, to Monday, Dec. 19, 2022, the South Simcoe Police Service responded to 176 calls for service.
