Richmond Hill driver charged in Vaughan crash that killed two

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit have laid charges in connection with a fatal collision in the City of Vaughan.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020 at approximately 1:30 p.m., York Regional Police responded to reports of a collision that had occurred in the area of Rutherford and Weston Roads. When officers arrived at the scene, they learned that a blue Maserati and a black Hyundai Tuscan had collided, then struck a third vehicle.

Four people were taken to hospital for their injuries. Sadly, an 80-year-old woman from Vaughan, who was a passenger in the Hyundai Tuscan, was pronounced deceased in hospital.

The driver of the Tuscan, an 83-year-old man from Vaughan, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He has sadly succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The driver and a passenger in the Maserati attended hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Maserati is now facing charges in connection with the incident.

    •    Ali Reza Bakhshi-Lijani, 27, of the City of Richmond Hill

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police, or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the collision, are being asked to please come forward. We would also like to speak to anyone who saw either of the vehicles or has information on driving behaviours prior to the collision.
