Residents invited to sign book of condolences for YRP officer

Condolence books are available in the Newmarket police station, and across the region, for Const. Travis Gillespie, who was killed in a collision yesterday

York Regional Police Const. Travis Gillespie was killed in a traffic collision in Markham Sept. 14.

Members of the community can offer their condolences for the death of York Regional Police Const. Travis Gillespie by signing one of the books at stations across the region, including in Newmarket. 

Gillespie, 38, was killed in a collision in Markham on Sept. 14 while driving to work. He has been a member of the force since April 2020 and worked in uniform patrol in #2 District in Richmond Hill. 

"Members of York Regional Police offer our sincere thanks for the outpouring of sympathy and support from members of the community, emergency responder agencies, law enforcement partners and community organizations following the tragic death of Const. Travis Gillespie. We are grateful for the compassion shown to us during this difficult time," police said in a news release. 

Community members can share their condolences by signing the books that have been set up in the lobby of each of the district headquarters, as well as YRP headquarters. In Newmarket, the #1 District station is at 429 Harry Walker Parkway South. 

Books of Condolences are also located at the following places: 

  • #2 District – 171 Major Mackenzie Dr. West, Richmond Hill
  • #3 District – 3527 Baseline Rd., Sutton
  • #4 District – 2700 Rutherford Rd., Vaughan
  • #5 District – 8700 McCowan Rd., Markham
  • Headquarters – 47 Don Hillock Dr., Aurora

The books will be sent to Gillespie's family. He is survived by his parents, loved ones, and colleagues. 

Peel Regional Police, which is conducting the collision investigation related to this incident, is expected to release a new release later today.
