Police canine unit collars trio of teen car theft suspects in King

Three Toronto-area teens have been charged after York Regional Police used a canine unit to stop suspected car thieves who had fled on foot early today in King.

One of the suspects was carrying a baton and has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, police said.

An officer on patrol observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of 7th Concession Road and King Road at around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, York Regional Police said in a news release.

Officers maintained a visual on the vehicle until it came to a stop on 16th Sideroad, when several occupants got out and fled. 

Officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen and set up a perimeter.

A canine unit located the suspects, police said, and the stolen vehicle was recovered.

A 16-year-old male from Scarborough is charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, as well as carrying a concealed weapon.

Two other teens from Toronto, ages 16 and 17, are also charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
