Person of interest wanted in suspicious Buttonville airplane fire

Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking witnesses and asking a person of interest to come forward following a suspicious airplane fire that occurred at Buttonville Airport in the City of Markham.

On Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, at 11:30 p.m., York Regional Police were called to Buttonville Airport, located at 2833 16th Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a Dassualt Falcon 50 tri-jet on fire, outside of hangar #5. The fire was extinguished by Markham Fire and Emergency Services and there were no injuries.

Investigators working in conjuction with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office have determined the fire was arson. Investigators have obtained video surveillance and are releasing a photo of a person who is believed to have information that may assist in the investigation. This person, or anyone who can identify him, is asked contact police.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to come forward.
