One person is in serious condition in hospital and another is arrested following a stabbing at Made in Mexico restaurant on Main Street Newmarket late Friday afternoon.

An altercation between two employees occurred in the restaurant's kitchen, according to a witness.

A heavy police presence is visible on Main between Timothy Street and Park Avenue, however there is no danger to public safety, York Regional Police said.

“I don’t feel very comfortable that happened just right across the street from us,” said Silvana Stefani, who is operations manager at Coco 40 at 184 Main South.

Made in Mexico is a favourite spot to dine for her and she said it was difficult to witness someone being carried away on a stretcher.

“I feel shaken up by that,” she said.

Also across the street at Wine on Main, customer service representative Maryann Ritchie said seeing multiple police vehicles arrive on the scene was “unnerving.”

“It panics you because there’s so many of them. It was crazy,” Ritchie said. “Strange thing to see in a small town.”

The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be provided when available.
