The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued a reminder in the wake of recent demonstrations that it is unsafe and illegal to obstruct the flow of traffic and for pedestrians to be on 400-series highways.

Under the Highway Traffic Act (Regulation 627), it is illegal for pedestrians to be on 400-series highways, as well as on and off-ramps, police said in a news release.

Pedestrians are prohibited on 400-series highways because of the risks to safety for both the pedestrians and the motoring public.

The Highway Traffic Act (Section 132) also prohibits vehicles from being driven at such a low rate of speed to impede or block the normal movement of traffic, OPP said. In addition, anyone who obstructs, interrupts or interferes with the lawful use of property can be charged under Section 430 of the Criminal Code with mischief.

While the OPP said it "acknowledges and respects the right to lawful, peaceful and safe expressions of opinion, there is no right to restrict or disrupt transportation infrastructure."

"All Ontarians have a right to a safe environment, and to free and uninhibited passage within the province of Ontario. Let's work together to make sure demonstrations remain lawful, peaceful and safe," police said.
