One man was arrested twice in one weekend after he was caught breaking into vehicles in Georgina, York Regional Police said.

Matthew Sedgley, 38, of no fixed address, was charged with six counts of thefts under $5000 and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

On Friday, Nov. 26 at about 7:20 p.m. YRP responded to reports of a man breaking into vehicles in the area of Spring Road and The Queensway South. They located and arrested the suspect. He was then released pending a court date.

The next day, Saturday, Nov. 26 at about 8 p.m. officers responded to a call about a suspicious man believed to be breaking into vehicles in the area of Amberview Drive and Fairwood Avenue. They found the same suspect from the previous call and laid additional charges.

YRP said they may be other victims and additional thefts that weren't reported to police. They ask you to come forward if you had items stolen from your vehicle.

Police also have advice for the public on how to protect your vehicle from theft.

They said to make sure you keep your windows closed, your doors locked, and to never leave your keys behind or unattended somewhere in plain view.

You are advised to park in a locked garage if possible or in a well-lit area.

They also said to not leave packages or valuables in your car and if you have to leave something in a vehicle you should put it in the trunk.

They also advise keeping your proof of insurance and vehicle registration on you at all times instead of storing them in your glove box.

Anyone who has information about these recent vehicle thefts or thinks they may have been a victim can contact York Regional Police #3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext.7341, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-tips, or online at www.1800222tips.com.
