Newmarket man charged after sexual assault at Aurora restaurant

A 12-year-old girl was assaulted by an unknown male in the bathroom, police said.

An 82-year-old Newmarket man has been charged in relation with a sexual assault at an Aurora restaurant on June 16. 

York Regional Police said at about 6:40 p.m. on June 16 a 12-year-old girl went into the bathroom at a restaurant in the area of Bayview Avenue and Earl Stewart Drive. She reported to police that she was assaulted by an unknown male suspect. 

Police released surveillance footage of the suspect after the incident and following that received a call that a man matching the description was walking in the area of Woodland Hills Labyrinth Park in Newmarket at about 9:40 a.m. on June 18. 

The man was located and arrested. Mir Mirzai of Newmarket is now facing charges of sexual assault and sexual interference. 

Investigators are still asking any witnesses, additional victims or anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault is encouraged to report it to police and reports can be made several years after the incident as there is no statute of limitations for these crimes.
