Newmarket man accused of hate-motivated assault in Toronto

A Newmarket man is the suspect in what police say was a hate-motivated assault in a Toronto parking lot on Monday.

Habib Selcuk, 44, of Newmarket, has been charged with assault by Toronto Police Services. 

Police said a man in a parking lot near Dufferin Street and Wilson Avenue became involved in a verbal altercation with another man regarding a vacant parking spot on Monday, Dec. 18, according to a TPS news release.

The man used an anti-Asian slur and assaulted the other man, police said.

Selcuk is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024 at the Ontario Court of Justice.

This investigation is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence, police said.
