Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newmarket went into a lockdown this morning after an injury to a student.

York Regional Police received a report about an injured student at about 10:20 a.m. Sept. 11 and is currently on the scene for the ongoing investigation.

“Due to the circumstances of not being sure what transpired, the police are at the school and searching the school looking to understand what took place,” said Sgt. Clint Whitney. “One of the students was transported to hospital in stable condition.”

The school implemented the lockdown after the incident and police said updates will be provided as necessary.

Sacred Heart Catholic High School has issued a statement to parents.

“Sacred Heart is currently in a lockdown as a police investigation is ongoing inside the school due to a student injury,” the statement said. “The student has been transported to hospital in serious condition and their family has been informed. We do not currently have a timeline for when the lockdown will end, as the police must provide that direction."

Parents took to social media to share their concerns Monday morning about the situation.

“My daughter is texting me and she’s really sacred,” wrote one parent on Facebook. “She said they had to crowd into the back corner of the class for 30 min with the lights off and doors locked. They have been allowed to return to their seats but are still locked in their classrooms.”
