A 35-year-old man of no fixed address has been arrested in connection with an attempted robbery by a suspect armed with a knife at a Newmarket coffee shop yesterday.

A suspect was seen walking around Yonge Street on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at about 4:15 p.m., waving a knife and attempting to slash vehicle tires, York Regional Police said in a news release.

A man then entered a coffee shop on Yonge, south of Savage Road, and demanded money from an employee, while pointing the knife at him, police said.

No money was turned over and the suspect then fled the store, police added. The suspect was located nearby and arrested.

At the time of the arrest, the man was on an existing probation order from unrelated charges, police said.

Police have not released the name of the man charged with possession of a weapon, robbery and breach of probation.
